If you are creating a fantasy world like me, it is important to consider map creation. Regardless of the setting of your world, it is crucial to construct a map to ensure both your audience and yourself comprehend the layout of this new world while writing.
There are many methods available for creating a fantasy world map, such as various apps and websites. However, if you do not want to invest money in map-building tools, you can opt for the method I selected: the rice method.
After watching multiple Youtube tutorials on crafting fantasy maps, I found this particular one to be the most straightforward. All you need is rice, paper, and a pencil or pen.
Step 1: Pour the Rice
This is the easiest but most important part. Whether you have a vision in mind or not, simply pouring the rice and shaping it to your liking is easy. You can also manipulate it to add mountainous areas and lakes if you want a more in depth look at what your world could look like. If you're unsatisfied with the result, you can easily reset by picking up the rice and starting again.
Step 2: Draw the Outline
Once you have the rice set to our liking, take your pen or pencil and outline each piece.
Make sure to outline the small islands that have broken away from the main bunch, as well as any lakes you may have included.
Optional Step 3: Add Water Features
After creating a basic outline of your fantasy world, consider sketching an outline around the shape and adding water marks to represent large bodies of water.
Step 4: Add Geographical Features
After completing the outline of your fantasy world, you need to add various features such as mountains, forests, rivers, and more. I revisited Youtube to learn how to draw these features and discovered several techniques that I liked and applied to my map.
And now you have a fantasy world map! The next tasks include adding cities and deciding on a name for your new world.
